This publication recognizes the importance of the significance of Childhood studies. This particular area of study has been through a deep-rooted process of change and diversification over the past twenty-five years and this Handbook brings together important contributions by international researchers. The themes analyzed in this Handbook are from different areas of expertise such as sociology, social policy, social work, education, cultural studies, history, geography and law. The essays analyses past and present experiences but sets an agenda for future study.
            The book is divided into six parts - concepts; historical and socio-economic contexts; generational relations; everyday lives; practice and participation; children's rights and place in the world. The director of CIESPI, Irene Rizzini together with Natalie Henever Kaufman, wrote the chapter ‘Closing the gap between rights and the realities of children´s lives’.

CIESPI is a research and reference center dedicated to research and on-the-ground projects about children and youth, and their families and comnunities.
